Flag of Spain

The flag of Spain is also called as “red-weld flag”, which consists of three horizontal stripes - red, yellow and red, each red stripe being half the width of the central yellow stripe. The Spanish coat of arms is featured off-center on the left of the yellow stripe.

Red and yellow are traditional colors of Spain, and it is said that these two colors came from bullrings (plaza de toros): red represents the blood of the matador, and yellow represents the color of the dirt in the bullring.

The four pictures in the coat of arms symbolize the four ancient kingdoms of Spain.

The flag of Spain was first introduced by Charles III as the naval ensign in 1785, and it symbolized the country ever since. It became the official flag of Spain in 1977.

In 1981, Spain decided to replace the original arm of shield with the coat of arms.
